The thief

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy..." John 10:10a (ESV)

I'm sure many of us have seen movies of when a burglary is taking place, more often than not these thefts took place at night. The reason is simple, the night is typically when the average persons senses are most vulnerable. So the thief comes when you are most vulnerable to steal from you.

In this passage, Jesus is referring to Satan as the thief, and is exposing his tired tactics so that we could be well aware of how he plans on attacking us. In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter the apostle refers to the enemy as a lion, looking to devour you. I didn't really know this, but the male lion attacks predominantly by night. So in each instance whether he's a lion or a thief the enemy is looking to attack you at your most vulnerable point.

It's a good thing that God has his angels surrounding you and protecting you from his attacks, especially by night (Psalm 91:11). For His desire for you is as he says in John 10:10b, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." Live in abundance and protection!
